CELEBRITIES DEFEND MERYL STREEP AFTER DONALD TRUMP CALLS HER « OVERRATED »

Ben Affleck, Barbra Streisand, and more stand behind Meryl Streep to support the actress.

Meryl Streep was the true star of the Golden Globes on Sunday night, not only for being this year’s recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award but also for taking down Donald Trump in a powerful acceptance speech. In it, she called out the president-elect for mocking a disabled person on the campaign trail and advised Hollywood and the press on how to move forward under his administration. « When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose, » she said.

Donald Trump was quick to respond, labeling Meryl as a « Hillary lover » in an interview with the New York Times and calling her « one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood » in a string of tweets soon after. (He did, however, call her an « excellent » actress in 2015.)

Despite the remarks, fellow actors and A-listers stood by Streep’s side. See how celebrities reacted to Trump’s comments below.

GEORGE CLOONEY

« Aren’t you supposed to be running the country? » George said of Trump in an interview with The Guardian. « I didn’t vote for him, I don’t support him, I don’t think he’s the right choice. »

« At this moment in our lives we have to hope that he doesn’t destroy everything. The reality is you have to hope he will do a decent job because if the United States fails, really terrible things happen, so you have to hope that he can, » he added.

BEN AFFLECK

« If there’s one thing truly in the world that we know is not true, it’s that Meryl Streep is overrated, » Ben said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night. « Pick a better shot rather than the person whose photograph actually accompanies ‘great actress,' » he later added.

BARBRA STREISAND

In a phone interview on Hardball with Chris Matthews, the actress said: « I thought that she said what she said beautifully and I completely agree with Meryl — it was a heartbreaking moment and so beneath the dignity of the presidency, let alone any respectful person. And what we need more in this world is kindness and common decency, and how he reacts and how he has the need to talk back and insult anybody who doesn’t agree with him, that’s pretty disgraceful. »

Barbra added later on, « Why isn’t he sitting through briefings rather than tweeting this nonsense? I don’t know how we’re going to take four years of this. »
